Below are my personal learning experiences regarding the Learning Theories listed:
Behaviorism:
Most technology training is based on a behaviorist approach. I have taken a number of courses that combined the information provided with “skill and drill” exercises. As a technical trainer, I’ve conducted many courses of this nature. Many of these courses contain software simulations that are interactive which require the student perform certain steps. If the steps are not performed correctly or in the required sequence, the student will receive a “Try Again” message. Whereas, if the student performs the correctly, they receive a “Good Job” message and then continue to the next segment or module. After awhile, these types of courses become monotonous. I believe with the innovation of Gamification, courses such as these are now fun.
Constructivism:
My institution offers The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People-Foundations training. This training is a full-day session. If I remember correctly, the room was arranged with four (4) square tables that seated four (4) people. At the tables, we were facing each other which is optimal in group collaboration.
The skills in the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) were the 7 habits. The facilitator gave us specific instructions to follow. We were either paired up with someone else or our table participated in a task as a group together.
The facilitator provided us with demonstrations and videos as she guided us through each habit. Each segment or habit usually had a video component to reinforce or further explain the information delivered. I believe this is an example of scaffolding.
Everyone would then mention how or where they could apply the information or habit to their lives. Although throughout this session, we collaborated in groups, each person shared their personal knowledge and past experience. I found this to be an extremely satisfying learning experience.
Cognitivism and Connectivism
My experience with these learning theories has been in taking this Instructional Design and Technology: Learning Theories course. This is the first MOOC in which I’ve participated. In this course, I’ve used the knowledge I already had and acquired new information regarding the learning theories which I’m processing and formulating new ideas and concepts as well as responding to and sharing with my peers within the discussion board. I believe this provides a more in-depth and rewarding learning experience. I’m thoroughly enjoying this course, and will definite take another MOOC soon.
